Natural Adaptation AwardBranding Madrid’s Climate-Resilient Green Spaces.

Contest Flyer

Introduction

The Natural Adaptation Award is a speculative design initiative to reimagine the branding of Madrid's Royal Botanical Gardens and Retiro Park. As temperatures soar past 40°C, these green spaces provide essential cooling, air purification, and shade. The project challenges creative agencies to craft visual narratives that emphasize their critical role in urban climate resilience, going beyond conventional branding approaches.

What if?

What if visual narratives could transform perceptions of parks, portraying them as essential climate infrastructure rather than just recreational spaces?

What if branding campaigns included storytelling elements—both physical and digital—that highlighted how plants and ecosystems adapt to climate extremes, inspiring visitors to connect with these natural processes?

What if parks were branded as "climate allies," with visual identities that underscored their role in sheltering urban populations from the impacts of extreme weather events?

Weak signals

Bioconstruction and Biomimicry-Based Urban Planning

Designing building exteriors that can adjust to changing environmental conditions.

Urban Heat Island Mitigation

Designing cities with green corridors, water features, and reflective surfaces to reduce overall urban temperatures.

Self-Regulating Ecosystems

Buildings are designed to adapt to ambient conditions, similar to how organisms regulate their body temperature.

Prototype

We developed a speculative design initiative that:

  • Reimagines the branding of Madrid's Royal Botanical Gardens and Retiro Park
  • Explores the intersection between Nature, Technology, and Sustainable Design
  • Offers new ways of communicating the symbiotic relationship between Green Spaces and Extreme Weather Adaptation
